I was recently trying to install Ubuntu 8.04 on an old Dell PowerEdge 2550.  The normal Desktop or Server install CDs would error out at seemingly random points during the install.  Internet searches showed that I wasn’t alone.  I finally came across a solution that worked for me in a single forum:

The Ubuntu Minimal CD is tiny CD image (I burned it to a business card CD) that installs only the base Ubuntu system, then gives you options of what else to install by downloading from the internet.  When I say “options”, I mean OPTIONS!  You can check any desktop version you want, multiple server options, tons of choices.

I’m keeping that business card CD handy.  If you have an internet connection on the machine, it becomes a universal install disk.

MY UBUNTU HOME SERVER

How To Set Up An Ubuntu Server As A Firewall/Gateway
Then Add A Bunch More Functions!

I’m working on getting all of my notes on my home Ubuntu server build posted. The first part is up. Keep checking for updates!

Okay, early last year, I posted on ways to protect your privacy. This year, I’ll let you in on my resolution from last year: Regular backups!

My resolution last year was to back up all of my important data (photos/video, email, documents, etc.) from my main machine, two laptops and one server to a dedicated external hard drive on every date ending in “0″ (i.e.: 10th, 20th, and 30th).  I’m proud to say that I have, mostly, kept to my resolution. This year, I’m hoping to improve the method I use to do my backups.

I currently use a very nice open source program named “Abakt“. The developer has, unfortunately, discontinued development. Tha last version is still available if you want to try it.

My goal is to have a network-based, automatic back up system using my server (more on the server in a later post). I plan to use Bacula, another fine open source project. It’s a bit complicated; not for the faint of heart, but I hope to learn it and back up all the computers in the house (11 at last count) with this system.

The server needs a rebuild first. I want to upgrade it to Ubuntu 8.04 before I start on Bacula. There will surely be a server build post at some point in the near future. Until then…

Back up your data!

Benjamin Keen has released his Data Generator code under the GPL! Download it here:

Data Generator Download

Don’t forget to toss him a few bucks if you find it useful! You know the time it saves is worth it!

I found a great web site that allows you to generate random(ish) data (of the appropriate types) for testing your applications.

www.benjaminkeen.com

He’ll be posting the code later this week, and I’ve offered to mirror it for him for as long as my data transfer allocation holds out.
Check out the rest of his site for other interesting entries and free apps!
